James T. and Georgianne D. Neal Journalism Scholarship

Established to preserve freedom of the press and the public’s right to know. This scholarship fund was created at Butler to encourage entering first-year students to major in journalism, participate in school publications, and develop the potential to sustain a career in the field of journalism. The recipient may renew for the remaining three years of his or her Butler career. Realizing that the profession of journalism has expanded to include writing and disseminating news over the Internet, the Neals want to encourage student involvement with the University’s student run online newspaper by adding a fifth scholarship for the editor-in-chief of that online newspaper. James ‘42 and Georgianne have devoted their lifetime to the field of journalism. James served as editor of the Butler Collegian. He also served on Butler’s Board of Trustees and as interim head of Butler’s Journalism Department.
